Past and Present: Atlanta Military Communities and Family Support Organizations
Atlanta isn’t the major military hub that it once was, now that both Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem have closed following the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendations. Even today, the McPherson Planning Local Redevelopment Authority (MPLRA) and the Department of Defense continue to development the community and, in doing so, create myriad legacy-based military storage needs. What’s more, Atlanta and the surrounding communities are still home to several Air Force and National Guard installations. Here is a list of active military bases in our Atlanta storage area:
Dobbins Air Reserve Base – The largest multi-reserve training base in the world. Home to more than 10,000 guardists and reservists from all four branches of the armed services. Also known as Naval Operations Support Center Atlanta (NOSC).
Lucius D. Clay National Guard Center – Located at the site of former Naval Air Station Atlanta, directly south of Dobbins ARB. Head of the Georgia State Department of Defense and a training area for up to 1,500 Georgia State National Guardsmen.
Robins Air Force Base – 100 miles south of Atlanta, Robins Air Force Base is home to the Warner Roberts Air Logistics Complex, the 78th Air Base Wing, the 330th Aircraft Sustainment Wing, the 402d Maintenance Wing, and the 542nd Combat Sustainment Wing, among others.
